Back Page

Image
The Back Page of the booklet is something that has caused me the most difficulty in designing, even more so then the ad, as I try to include everything the client wants. While still making the design look good and match the rest of the design. This is due to the fact that most of the booklets I have seen and looked at while researching, they tended to keep their back page plain.  This has further proved difficult for me to design for the print version, this is because it would want completely different information. A printed booklet would not want to you put in your email address as that would then involve cutting up the back page, and thus the page connected to it, as well as then posting that off when it would be easier to direct people to either the digital version or another webpage that could take in this information. It would however, defiantly need to companies contact information, as this wouldn't be hosted on their site and could be taken home with a pile of other booklet

Scamp Vs Final Design

Image
Between creating three different scamp designs, the design has again changed as I have created the final design for the booklet. This is due to the fact that it does look slightly different as images and the final text is added, adding the lorem ipsum text to create the main text format is helpful, however isn't as accurate as the actual text being in there. This is due to different paragraph and word lengths, as well as force creating line breaks to add some slight interest into the text blocks themselves so they have more interest and don't just look like one solid block of text, which can turn a lot off people off and away from reading something. One of the biggest difference between this is seen in the page spread 2-3. This screenshot is taken from the third pass of the scamp, and even includes the text that is used in the final design of the booklet on the page on the left. The Ad takes up the page in that format with a place holder heading area and a very large QR code.

Design Theories

Image
When it came to designing the booklet it was very important to focus on how the design itself looks, and this actually far more complicated then it sees. Graphic Design uses the key art elements of: Line Colour Shape Texture  Space Form Typography How these are all combine can come up with completely different designs, even if the designer only changes one of the elements, so it's important to pay attention to how they are all used and combined.  In a booklet especially, the placement of things and the space and form of it is very key to the layout. If there is a key, eye-catching element is on the right and pointing right, then they will look straight to that and then off of the page. It is key to ensure that not only are they in the right place but they are pointing in the right direction, imagine it like an arrow that's guiding your eyes on where to look. The focal point of the design, if you chose to have one comes off as the main point of the design. Emphasis to it is achi

Photographs

Image
For the images I want to use inside the booklet, I want to source as many from my own trip as possible, this is because I want the booklet to feel less like it's aimed at some sort of professional photography and instead have that feel of genuine people seeing the animals. However, these images are quite old and weren't shot with raw files, so I will need to go in and do a lot of editing for them to get them up to a higher quality. I also did not see all of these animals myself so I will need to source and credit the original photographer, as well as possibly edit them so they look similar.  With how the booklet is laid out I will need; 2 photos for all of the big five and then at least 4 photos of Borneo in general to be used across a couple of pages. I shall first edit all of the photos that are suitable that I shot myself, before then sourcing free to use photos from other photographers. Editing Process I shall only go through the editing process for one of these images, as

Text

One of the things the client also wanted for this was to create the text myself for the booklet. To do this I made sure to look at other texts about these animals that were factually corrected and aimed at a similar audience. My main source for this research was either the WWF website or National Geographic. This is because they are both reliable, factual websites with information on all of the animals, used by many other countries around the world, it has to be reliable and accurate, which is why I felt confident to use it as a base for the information. I made sure, when writing it, that as well as facts and information I used personal language to refer to the readers. This is because the company would want it to feel like they're personally talking to the reader, almost making it come off that they were personally giving this information to the one person. Doing this helps engage the reader, but also make them like the company more as they feel as if they are a part of this, bei

Digital Vs Print

Image
There's a few differences between a digital and print booklet, especially as the client wants the digital version of this booklet to be interactive. Assets that are made to be interactive will have no use in the print version, and in some cases this will leave them awkwardly placed on a printed booklet, or highlighted in a strange way that just looks off.  Due to this, I shall create the print version of the booklet, save a final copy of that as an InDesign file as well as export it into a PDF ready to print. Then, I shall create a second copy of the InDesign file, add in all of the interactive elements and export that into a file best suited to be used online and interactive. Sometimes, these interactive elements, even if they are something such as an image that will be in both version, do not actually print, due to how InDesign views them, so it really is easier to just create them as two slightly different InDesign files that can be provided if anything needs changing. The main

Created Assets

Image
With the design and aesthetic which I am going for with this target audience and style of the booklet, I did not want to just include photos as the assets I use. In most cases I also wish to create as many assets myself rather then taking them from an outside source. The other reason which I wanted to do this was because many sites and stipulations over what images can be used for, and whether an extra fee then has to be paid for to use the image commercially. Creating as many images myself, means that the company has to worry about less licences that they main not own. Background Image: This is the only image that was sourced from someone other then myself to be used. This was because I wanted an Asian pattern that had been accurately drawn, and I did not see the point in recreating an asset that already existed in the colours which I required. To ensure that it was sourced responsibly, I used rawpixel. The client would need to look into purchasing a licence for commercial use, howev

Creating a Scamp: Part Two

Image
From there with the scamp I went into creating the text boxes and starting on the format for how these should look using the lorem ipsum place holder text.  This was slightly difficult as the paragraphs there will be no doubt different to how the final, actual information will be. However, it does aid in the visual sense for how it will look as well as give the general base to continue to work off of. The main change alongside adding in the text and starting to format it, was adding in the image boxes and working out the rough colour scheme with which I want to work with. I went with a red & gold colour scheme as they are very prominent colours in Asian designs, alongside blue and silver. However, I decided that red and gold would pop more off of the mostly green photos helping them all to stand out, rather then blend in slightly which would happen with the blue. With the red being the main colour for the accents, it being a complimentary colour with green makes it in general very

Creating a Scamp: Part One

Image
A scamp is the base form of how a piece is going to look and be laid out. This can then be used as a template for creating the final design of the product, in this case the e-pub, as in InDesign it is very easy to edit and swap out images and text without changing the format.  This was very helpful, considering the fact it then allowed more experimentation and consideration for how the design will look while still selecting the right images and specific design work to include into the design. It also allowed a more clinical look at how the design and overall look will be, as the placeholder text and 'images' doesn't distract from the general layout and sometimes it is easy to get distracted by the pretty pictures and not actually consider the layout.  Creating a scamp also helped with setting up the master page designs on InDesign, it allowing quick changes in designs without having to go through and redraw the whole thing or edit images multiple time, which then saves a l

Target Audience

It is important to think of and solidify what target audience this booklet is aimed at. This is because the target audience will greatly affect the design and layout within the pages, something incredibly formal will be off putting to a child, and likewise, something really childish will put of anyone who isn't a parent.  The way that the animals themselves are presented and talked about will also be affected, giving the reader the information that the target audience would want to know best, thus drawing them in and feeling more personal so that they want to read it. When it comes up to the EPub part of the clients brief, this would also be affected by the target audience. How the interactions look can very easily turn off a viewer or not be obvious enough to them if it is not aimed at the correct person. My Target Audience: I found it surprisingly difficult to come up with a specific Target Audience for this booklet, especially considering how many different audiences their is fo

Layout

Image
The layout of this specific Booklet is incredibly important. This is because they were provided by the client so they want it in that specific way otherwise it would not reach brief and they would not want it.  To ensure that this brief is kept to, I have taken note of it and will keep it out every time that the booklet is worked on, especially the scamp. Provided Requirements: ● A4 booklet format ● 10 pages in total ● All margins to be set to 1cm ● Page 1, 2 must contain no columns ● Pages 3 to 5 must have two columns with a divider ● Pages 6 to 10 can have any layout ● Page 1 to be a front/title page ● Page 2 must be an introduction to the Big Five ● Page 3 should be a full page add including a voucher, that can be cut out or used online. ● Pages 4 – 9 must contain information, relating to the Big Five ● Page 10 must be contact information and acknowledgements with links to at least 4 other websites with related content This is incredibly helpful, however the layout provid
