Graphic Design

 What exactly is Graphic Design?
Where will I find it?
What's the key point of Graphic Design?

Graphic Design involves both Text and Images, used in combination to convey some form of meaning or message. It's used to communicate with the viewer and can either be subtle in this narrative or more obvious to the audience.

You do need to make sure that the work, works for the message you're trying to communicate across to the audience to avoid errors and misunderstandings with the audience.
To ensure this there is some things to consider:
Function
Target Market
Aesthetics
Layout
If one of these points fail, then it will pull down the whole piece.

With combining text and imagery, you need to ensure that they work well together, what area that the text takes up, the specific font it uses and how that works with the message you portray. Sometimes the text will need to be visible at a distance, other times only when you are close up to it, this depends on the use of the graphic design and where it is going to be displayed.

Visual Imagery - This is a key part of Graphic Design
The image narrative subtle or obvious, can also be simple or complex
There's also different ways you can have this imagery:
Realistic
Semi-Abstract
Abstract
It can be a photo or a drawing / vector
This imagery will be the main thing that draws your audience in, so you need to make sure that it works with your specific target audience. In general an adult audience will be drawn in more with realistic and photographic pieces and children more abstract, but it really depends and needs to be researched when you're learning about your target audience.

Layout
This is incredibly important to think about, you have a 2D space to edit how you wish and it's important to lay it out well.
If the layout is bad, then it won't draw in your audience and can be read incorrectly.
How will people read your image?
-Most people will start reading / looking at anything from left to right and then top to bottom
The only way this will be changed is if there is something eye catching that will deliberately draw the viewers eyes to that point, breaking the usual viewing method.
There are also some specific points people will look at first, and then may not pay much attention too at all.
i.e Title at the top - Will be spotted almost straight away
Barcode in the bottom right corner - People may not even pay any attention to this point.

The function of the graphic design
This is incredibly key to think about, as something viewed from close up can have smaller details then something viewed from far away.
How effective it is, how easy to read, and what stands out.
Billboards will be very large, but viewed at a distance and normally from slightly below. Where as a booklet has a back page where you can include smaller important information.
Your Target Market is who you are attracting the attention of, it's who you should interest, so with the function as well as all other points of graphics you need to.

As it's becoming clear, it's important to make the work look good graphically, but it is also key to focus on your target market the whole time as if it doesn't suit them, then you're not going to attract the people you need and it will be considered unsuccessful.
